Why the hell are ugg boot suppliers so hell-bent on advertising by spamming my LiveJournal comments? Do they genuinely believe that I attract high volumes of fuzzy footwear enthusiasts?

This is me making a public LJ post about the long-running Final Fantasy videogame series.

Part of the reason I'm posting this is because it feels weird - it's genuinely strange that we're now living so far in the future that a game franchise can celebrate its quarter-century. It's also strange when I reflect that I've enjoyed the series for more than half of its existence, although neither the newest nor the oldest entries have found their way onto my TV screen at this stage.

The other reason I'm posting this is to boost my chances of winning a 25th anniversary prize from my old pals at Eyes on Final Fantasy.

Two years. 11,200 earthquakes and aftershocks.
And tonight, an apocalyptic hail and thunderstorm right over the city to mark the occasion.

Current weather in Christchurch: 0.8 degrees C, it's been raining for twelve hours, and the first flakes of snow are just starting to fall. Not bad considering we're still only in the first week of winter...

Australian brewers ought to read more Terry Pratchett before implementing their novel marketing gimmicks:

‎"Queensland beer brewer XXXX has decided to create an entire man island.

Pumpkin Island, situated on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, will be renamed XXXX Island in a leasing agreement that will last for at least the next three years.

The beer brand plans to turn the 15 hectare landmass into a XXXX Gold-drinking bloke's paradise."

This has got some pretty exciting potential. If it ever makes it past the drawing board, it could be a return to the televisional form that Star Trek hasn't enjoyed since the glory years of Next Generation.

It doesn't seem quite as radical or inventive as Bryan Singer's idea, but I for one would love to see a new Trek show combining the established mythos with today's production and writing values.

The label on this South Austalian wine suggests cellaring for up to two years, but we only got around to opening it tonight.

Lots of supple-yet-subtle flavours of plums and other dark fruit - sweet but gently tart. Surprisingly, no hint of tannins or an alcohol bite, despite being an Australian red at 13.5%.

A thoroughly quaffable wine, with no outstanding strengths but no glaring shortfalls either. Goes well with meat, veges or dessert, or just on its own. If you're looking for a friendly, accommodating drop, and if this one's still on the shelves, it could be worth grabbing a bottle.

Water's back here - but pressure's intermittent, we need to boil because of the contamination risk, and it's only fit for sparing use because the infrastructure's taken another pounding. Still, we have the basics and everyone's ok so far, which is a relief.

Two more big aftershocks - magnitude 5.5 and 6.0, close and shallow. My team went back to work after the first one, then evacuated again and stayed out after the second one. Building took damage and, once again, we're at home till further notice.

Jo and I are ok. Home has lost water - there's liquefaction and water bubbling up in the streets again - but we still have electricity and plenty of bottled water. More stuff fell down, but things are generally intact.

News is still coming in, but there've been more injuries and a number of buildings damaged or destroyed. Addington is looking gridlocked on the outbound streets, with traffic lights not working on the intersection closest to us. I'd suggest not trying to drive in that area, especially away from town. Jo's noted that Ferry Road, between Settler's Cres and the bridge at Ferrymead, is flooded too.

The universe, from the smallest possible size to the largest.

In Flash, with a sliding scale to zoom in or out. Starting down at the Planck length, then slowly zooming out to the edge of existence, really puts things in a nice perspective.

Barring any further upheaval, the office will open again tomorrow afternoon. This'll be the first time I see the city centre in person since the initial quake. Even after all the news footage, it may still come as a real shock to witness it up close. I passed through Riccarton this evening, and the sheer number of felled shops was disturbing; the CBD, including Colombo and Manchester Streets, has been hit even harder.

Big aftershock this morning. One of the strongest, but very shallow which made it feel all the more intense. This'll probably prompt the re-evaluation of a lot of damaged buildings, but for now I'm going to assume I might still get the call that the office will re-open in the afternoon.

Slept fairly well last night. The aftershocks are getting further and further apart, though the intensity is still variable. We're boiling water, but there's no immediate danger of shortage in our neighbourhood. I went across town last night to deliver some fresh water to a friend whose supply has been disabled. South New Brighton's a mess, thanks to the sandy or marshy soil, which tends to behave a lot like liquid once it starts heaving and shaking. Lots of roads closed due to flooding from the ruptured water and sewerage pipes; other roads impassable due to damaged surfaces.

Still no word on whether I'm back at the office tomorrow; the central city still seems to be closed down due to unsafe buildings.

It looks like we were lucky at our place - no real damage, but a huge mess. Water and electricity's ok, but we'll be boiling drinking water or relying on stocks until Civil Defence advise differently. Staying at home for now, but may make another shopping run later. Some pretty hefty damage within a block of our place - collapsed walls, crushed vehicles. My manager called - she's contacting everyone from work to see how they're doing. The central city's in a terrible state so I might not be back at work on Monday. For now, though, I'm just glad that everyone's survived and most are safe and well.

(cross-posted from Facebook)

So, Avenue Q is finally coming to New Zealand. Auckland only, 13 to 23 May. I'm thinking of an overnight trip for one of the weekend performances. Maybe fly up on Saturday morning, catch the matinee or evening show, then back on Sunday. Who's keen?

There're a number of good seats left, especially for the matinees, both premium and economy. If we make arrangements soon, it should be possible to get a decent plan going - as well as having plenty of time to sort out air fares, accommodation and whatnot.

It's neat that Mythbusters took a look at Magyar mounted archery, but a little bothersome that they still haven't learned that modern carbon-fibre sporting shafts aren't a good substitute for sturdy wood arrows with solid points.

Big thunderstorm out over the plains tonight, roughly west northwest from the city. There've been bright flashes of sheet lightning since late afternoon, and they were still going on when I got home a short while ago. Quite an impressive sight, and more so since it's so far away that the thunder's completely inaudible.
